The Prato Textile Museum presents for the first time to the public an accurate selection of men’s and women’s costumes designed by Milena Canonero for the film Marie Antoinette (2006) directed by the American director Sofia Coppola from 11 February to 27 May 2018. The story of Sofia Coppola, elaborated from the most accredited biography of the queen published in 1932 by Stefan Zweig, cuts a new and fresh profile of Marie Antoinette, perceived as a teenager of our days that welcomes, in a context of absolute rigidity of conventions, the most pleasant aspect of its existence in Versailles.
The costumes designed by Milena Canonero take into account the psychological portrait of the character proposed by the director and are the result of an in-depth iconographic survey on eighteenth-century European painting that allowed to study the shapes, jewels, hairstyles, embroideries and substructures.Marie Antoinette. The costumes of an Oscar queen, this is the title of the exhibition, is organized by the Prato Fabric Museum Foundation in collaboration with The Tailor’s The One, the youngest cinematographic and theatrical tailoring in Rome that houses a vast heritage of clothes that tell the story history of Italian and foreign television, theater and film shows.
The costumes of the film, considered by critics as the result of the best cinematographic reinterpretation ever made of 18th century clothing, are the extraordinary work of world-renowned costume designer Milena Canonero, who in 2007 received the Oscar for this production. A rich calendar of initiatives will accompany the public throughout the duration of the exhibition.
