This year, the 35th Goya Awards ceremony honoring the best in Spanish films of 2020 took place for the second consecutive year at the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Málaga on March 6th. The ceremony was hosted by actor Antonio Banderas and journalist María Casado. Due to the current context, the hosts, award presenters and music performers were present on-site, while the nominees appeared from their homes.

The Goya Awards celebrate Spanish cinema and the best professionals in each of the technical and creative specialties. Throughout its history, the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has recognized with the Goya, or with its nomination, the work of iconic Spanish and foreign stars, like Penélope Cruz, Rachel Weisz, Nicole Kidman, Salma Hayek, Juliette Binoche, Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo del Toro, Javier Bardem, Benicio del Toro or Viggo Mortensen, as well as great composers or directors of photography.

In the same annual ceremony is presented the Goya of Honor, which recognizes a lifetime of dedication to cinema. In 2020, it was awarded to Penélope Cruz, who presented best Hair and Makeup award this year.

Why did you choose this dress? How is it to finally attend a physical ceremony and how does it feel to wear Chanel for it?
I chose this dress with my friends at Chanel during a fitting in Paris a few months ago. I tried different looks and as always, it was difficult to decide because all of them are so incredible and special. But I thought this dress was the one for this ceremony. I did not want to be overdressed neither underdressed, it’s a special event, we need to be there more than ever to support our industry, cinema.

My friend Antonio Banderas is the host of the ceremony, I’m going with Pedro. It’s the perfect dress for this occasion, it’s very elegant, really modern and rock’n’roll, like Virginie herself and everything she’s doing, and I feel so comfortable in it, like if I was wearing jeans.

Why does the Métiers d’art collection always fascinate you? What’s so special about it?
The attention to details, the artistic way of working, the fact that I’ve been so lucky to know so many people at Chanel since 1999 when I attended my first show. Every time I’ve been able to visit the ateliers, I’ve become friends with some of the seamstresses that I admire very much, some of them have been at Chanel for more than 40 years!Penélope Cruz - Chanel Ambassador and presenter at the Awards, wore an embroidered satin bustier black dress, look 63, from "Le Château des Dames" 2020/21 Métiers d'art collection. Chanel is a big family, I see the same faces over and over again from the beginning, it gives a lot of credibility to all of it. And I’ve attended a few Métiers d’art shows, they are always very special.

What do you like about Virginie Viard’s creations for Chanel? How do you relate to her vision of fashion?
I relate because she designs thinking about women, not thinking about herself. She has amazing taste, I love what she likes, but she is very generous when she’s creating, she’s thinking about what’s beautiful but also about what’s practical and what will make you feel good when wearing it. It’s not a pose, she really is rock’n’roll and I love that side of her. And I love that she cannot handle compliments. When I get close to her after a show, when I start complimenting her, she blushes.

I love humble people, hard workers. She’s more Chanel than anybody because she’s been there for more than 30 years, being Karl’s right arm. I could not imagine anyone better to fill this position today and she’s creating incredible collections. She just represents the essence of Chanel. She’s Chanel in every way, and at the same time, every single piece she creates is completely new.Penélope Cruz - Chanel Ambassador and presenter at the Awards, wore an embroidered satin bustier black dress, look 63, from "Le Château des Dames" 2020/21 Métiers d'art collection.
