Strong silhouettes and generous lengths: the refined aesthetics by Virginie Viard for Chanel – Haute Couture Fall Winter 2022/23 collection

Straight lines and generous lengths: Chanel’s Haute Couture Fall Winter 2022/23 collection brings an elegant and refined yet free aesthetic to the catwalk.

Virginie Viard tried to bring the 1930s back to life by interpreting what Coco Chanel would have proposed in those years.

Long skirts with a linear silhouette are sometimes enriched with maxi fringes that wink at a country-chic mood also interpreted by boots, a tribute to the Étrier de Paris equestrian center, location of the show. Impossible not to refer to the previous show opened by Charlotte Casiraghi on horseback.

“I imagined the Haute Couture Fall Winter 2022/23 show in the continuity of the previous show, leaving room for experimentation”, says Virginie Viard.

Lace comes to bring movement, it is reinterpreted for this Haute Couture 22/23 collection by Chanel in an inlaid and colored version. Speaking of colors, we cannot fail to mention the palette: bright in shades of green and khaki, more classic with black and white, refined with beige, pink and silver.

The geometries of the round or square necklines, added to those of embroidery and motifs, are indeed a nod to the 1930s, but they also leave room for a certain love for the 70s. Also in this Haute Couture Autumn Winter 2022/23 collection Virginie Viard celebrates tweed and plays with shapes to renew it.

The style is masculine and sinuous with generous lengths, skirts with buttons, structured tops or soft jackets with strong lines. Men’s hats are added to complete an androgynous and contemporary mood. What is striking about this collection is certainly the fit halfway between snug and soft that allows the garments to have a chic allure but also to be contemporary and comfortable.

As always in the Chanel house, the great protagonists are the jewels. In this case, Virginie Viard has chosen to reinterpret the jewels from the High Jewelery collection of the “1932” anniversary, which pays homage to the first and only “Bijoux de Diamants” created in 1932 by Mademoiselle Chanel, using the necklaces “as celestial elements” that they adapt to the cuts of the clothes.
