North Sails was founded in 1957 by Lowell North, an American sailor, Olympic gold medalist and engineer with a dream: to create the fastest racing sails in the world. Year after year, Lowell North and his team introduced innovative technologies that led them to excel in many races. In 1989 North Sails launched its first clothing collection with its headquarters in Italy, in Rapallo. Today the spirit of Lowell North is transmitted in the North Sails Collection, designed and developed for those who love to face challenges on the open sea but also to navigate modern life.

North Sails’ motto is “Go Beyond”, or push yourself to go where others can’t. Exploration and innovation are the cornerstone and fundamental elements on which the brand has always been based, and the brand’s sense of responsibility for its protection and safeguarding the planet also arises from the close link with the ocean.

About 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada
Considered as the main event among international regattas, the America’s Cup dates back to 1851, when the schooner America crossed the Atlantic from New York to participate in the World’s Fair in England, and won the regatta around the Isle of Wight against a fleet of British yachts for the 100 Pound Cup. In 1857 the trophy was renamed the “America’s Cup” and donated to the New York Yacht Club as a prize for an international yacht club regatta.

Under the rules established for the competition, the winner of the America’s Cup Match gets the right to organize the next edition, including the choice of location and type of competing boats. American boats successfully defended the trophy 24 times, from 1870 to 1980, until in 1983 Australia II became the first challenger to defeat the American Defender and take the Cup away from US shores. Since then, the America’s Cup has been won on five occasions by American boats, twice by Swiss boats and three times by New Zealand crews.

In 2016, in Bermuda, during the 35th America’s Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand defeated Defender Oracle Team USA. Immediately after the final race, the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team syndicate, led by Prada co-CEO Patrizio Bertelli, was officially accepted as Challenger of Record. The Kiwi team subsequently announced that the 36th edition would be held in Auckland, New Zealand, in March 2021, to be held with the new and revolutionary AC75 monohulls, and with Prada as presenting partner.

The challenge of three other Challengers for the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada has been accepted: Ineos Team UK from Great Britain, NYYC American Magic from the USA, and a second American team, Stars + Stripes Team USA.
